About
Stem cells are unique cells capable of self-renewal and differentiation into a wide range of specialized cell types that form the tissues and organs of the human body, including bone, kidney, liver, blood, and the nervous system. While the differentiation potential of stem cells varies among different types, they collectively represent one of the most promising fields in modern biomedical research. In recent years, significant progress has been achieved in the clinical application of stem cell-based therapies, with numerous studies demonstrating encouraging outcomes in the treatment of a variety of diseases. To date, more than 3,000 clinical studies involving adult stem cells have been registered worldwide, reflecting the growing potential of regenerative medicine to transform the treatment of diseases that were once considered incurable.
University laboratories dedicated to stem cells and regenerative medicine constitute essential infrastructures for advancing stem cell science and technology. These facilities play a critical role in promoting high-quality research, developing innovative stem cell and cell-based therapeutic technologies, and providing novel therapeutic strategies for the management of degenerative and chronic diseases.
The Nervous System Stem Cell Research Center at Semnan University of Medical Sciences was established in May 2011 following approval by the University's Board of Directors through the dedicated efforts of its founding faculty members and the support of the University administration. In 2013, the Center obtained its preliminary approval from the Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME). The Center currently comprises 13 faculty members and operates five active research laboratories, providing advanced research facilities and technical support to faculty members, researchers, and graduate students.
The Center possesses extensive expertise in a broad range of experimental and translational research methodologies, including cell isolation and purification techniques, cell culture, studies of cell proliferation and apoptosis, cell therapy, gene expression analysis, animal models, and other advanced laboratory techniques that support cutting-edge research in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.
