Overview of the Core Research Laboratory

The Core Research Laboratory of Semnan University of Medical Sciences and Health Services was established by the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Technology with the aim of strengthening and expanding a network-based approach to laboratory activities, providing specialized laboratory services, and enabling the advancement of research projects for the benefit of faculty members, researchers, and students. At present, this laboratory is prepared to offer instrumental services to researchers of the university, as well as to other universities and research centers. The renovation, repurposing, and equipping of the Core Research Laboratory was placed on the university’s agenda in 2015, in line with the macro policies of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. To further strengthen this research infrastructure, the Core Research Laboratory is complemented by a network of specialized satellite laboratories, including the Flow Cytometry Laboratory, Rehabilitation Laboratory, and GC–Mass Laboratory. Collectively, these laboratories provide state-of-the-art infrastructure and technical expertise to support multidisciplinary research, advanced biomedical investigations, and translational science.

Goals

• Providing services and enhancing efficiency to meet research needs in the development and facilitation of medical sciences research in the country.
  
  
• Establishing, strengthening, and expanding the national medical sciences research laboratory network based on actual needs.
  
  
• Strengthening and expanding the network-based approach in laboratory activities related to research in universities and research institutions.
  
  
• Optimal utilization of laboratory equipment.
  
  
• Providing specialized services to support research projects at all academic levels, including faculty members, students of all degrees, and staff (as well as offering specialized services to other research centers and universities across the country through service contracts).
  
  
• Creating a space for communication and collaboration among all educational and research groups of the university.
  
  
• Procuring specialized and advanced laboratory instruments and equipment at this facility for use by all clinical and basic science groups.

Flow Cytometry Laboratory

The flow cytometry laboratory, as part of the satellite laboratories of the core research laboratory at Semnan University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, is located within the department of immunology and is ready to provide services to applicants.

Biobank

Every year, millions of biological samples are collected worldwide for various purposes, including fundamental research, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies. These biological samples are stored in biobanks for future investigations. Blood samples, frozen tissues, and paraffin-embedded tissues are considered the most common types of biobank specimens.

Biological samples represent a valuable treasure of primary resources for research data. International standards are based on the principle that biological samples are preserved under standardized conditions in dedicated biobanks and made accessible to researchers.

Considering the need of researchers at university for cellular and tissue samples to expand their research studies, and with the aim of establishing a capable center for the preservation and maintenance of biological specimens obtained from large cohort projects, the vice-chancellor for research and technology of the university and the head of the core research laboratory have played a significant role in the establishment of the university biobank by providing the necessary conditions and equipment (including the creation of a clean room, procurement of centrifuges, fluorescent inverted microscopes, CO₂ incubators, -80 freezer, Nitrogen tanks, installation of the nitrogen generator in the cold room of the core research laboratory and other essentials of the cell culture room.)

This biobank has been founded to foster mutual collaboration with researchers inside and outside the university, aiming to preserve resources, enhance quality, and strengthen the connection between research and clinical practice. It intends to expand its activities in three domains: Cell Bank, Molecular Bank, and Biological Sample Bank.

Workshops and Visits

The core research laboratory of Semnan University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, in order to further familiarize faculty members and students of university as well as other higher education institutions, has provided the opportunity for group visits to the laboratory equipment of this center. Holding an Educational Workshop

The core research laboratory of Semnan University of Medical Sciences and Health Services organizes periodic workshops to further familiarize faculty members and students with specialized laboratory equipment and instruments. In addition, this laboratory is prepared, if desired, to provide its laboratory facilities and instruments for the organization of structured workshops approved by the scientific-technical council of the laboratory, for the benefit of the educational departments of university.
